Crypto CFDs

A CFD on BTC/USD settles in cash and never touches a wallet — what that changes, and what it costs.

A CFD settles in cash: the coin never moves, and neither does a wallet. This is the route the money takes instead.

What a crypto CFD is, and what it is not

A CFD on BTC/USD is a contract with your broker that settles in cash. You never hold a coin, there is no wallet, no private key and no exchange account, and you cannot send what you bought anywhere. What you own is the price difference.

That cuts both ways. Custody risk disappears, and in exchange you take on the broker as counterparty, margin, and an overnight charge for every night the position stays open.

What this page will not do

It will not forecast a coin, rank exchanges, or print a spread table. Crypto spreads move with the hour and the venue, and a figure copied from somewhere else is the least reliable number on any page of this kind.

Where a figure appears here it comes from a broker document and carries the date we read it. The rest is the arithmetic of position size, which is yours to do and ours to make easy.

Leverage is the part that decides the outcome

BTC/USD can travel in a day what a metal travels in a month, so the leverage you pick is not a detail — it sets how far the market may go against you before the position is closed for you.

Work the two numbers out before you open anything: the margin locked by the size you want with the margin calculator, and the size that fits your stop with position size.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I own any bitcoin when I trade a BTC/USD CFD?

No. A CFD is a contract on the price of bitcoin, so you never hold the coin and never need a wallet or private keys. You profit or lose from the price difference when you close. That removes custody risk but adds leverage and financing costs, which a spot buyer does not face.

How does leverage change the risk of a crypto CFD?

Leverage lets you control a larger bitcoin position with a smaller margin deposit, so gains and losses are magnified against your capital. A small adverse move can wipe out the margin and trigger a stop-out. The maximum is the cap that applies to the entity serving this country, and it is a limit, not a target.

What does holding a bitcoin CFD overnight cost me?

An overnight financing charge, often called a swap, applies when you keep a CFD position open past the daily cut-off. The amount depends on the broker's rate and the size of your position, and we cannot quote it as a figure. Short holds avoid it, which is why the profit calculator should include it for multi-day trades.

Is a crypto CFD cheaper than buying bitcoin directly?

It depends on what you count. A CFD carries the spread, possible commission and overnight swap, but no wallet or storage costs and no need to move coins. Buying spot carries exchange fees and custody risk. Which is cheaper for you depends on your holding period and how you fund the account.

Can I lose more than I deposit on a bitcoin CFD?

Yes, in principle, because leverage means losses can exceed your initial margin if the market gaps against you. Most regulated brokers apply negative balance protection, but you should confirm this for the entity serving Kenya rather than assume it. Size positions with the position size calculator so a single loss stays survivable.
